What was it about Sex and the City, the HBO TV series, that drove us all into such a com complete and utter unadulterated shoe frenzy? It may have been the point when Carrie Bradshaw, the central character took a wrong turn in SoHo and found herself on one of New York's grungier side streets and face-to-face with a mugger. "Please sir, you can take my Fendi baguette, you can take my ring and my watch, but don't take my Manolo Blahniks." Unfortunately for Carrie and to the disgust of viewers, the mugger did just that and ran off with her favourite pair of strappy sandals!! Millions of people won't have ever even seen a pair of Manolo Blahniks but we all know of them and, even though many of us couldn't afford the $300 - $400 a pair, we still dream of owning them!! Or maybe it was the episode where Carrie's shoes go missing at a friend's baby shower? The episode entitled 'A womans right to shoes' made people chuckle, (and nod their heads in agreement) with the sentiment that shoes are just as important as baby gifts! Carries friend offers to pay for the missing shoes, but balks when she discovers that they cost $485. Carrie winds up leaving the apartment with no compensation, and a sense of shoe-induced shame. She wonders if she has somehow made a mistake by choosing the lifestyle that she did, rather than the more traditional one chosen by her friend. However Carrie does indeed get her replacement Manolos in the end! Hurrah! Whatever it is about Sex and the City, it definitely made us appreciate and revel in our addiction to shoes. Even the creator of Sex and the City Candace Bushnell admits that shoes were a sort of unplanned and unforeseen addition to the Sex and the City story _ "it was me, my team and Sarah Jessica Parker, who is also shoe crazy. She is crazy about every shoe ever created for her to wear - so it became a thing. They didn't write the show for fashion, but they realized it was the hook and latched on to it." At the end of the day we don't really care who was responsible for the inclusion of so many gorgeous pairs of shoes in Sex and the City - all we do know is that the show did indeed demonstrate for us hundreds of beautiful examples of much-desired shoes over its six seasons, and we wanted to own all of them!
